Because emptiness itself has no form, it is empty of “existence,” in that it has never come into being nor will ever go out of being.

Every form is finite, has a beginning and an ending–even the world or a universe. But that which is formless is not finite. Emptiness is also unchanging. 

In any ultimate sense, it is emptiness which is always the final actuality: all forms are empty.

When we dream at night, we dream of forms, our own included. When we awaken into the present, the dream disappears.

The Heart Sutra enumerates some phenomena that are empty forms: feelings, perspectives, thoughts, consciousness “are all empty.”

“There is no body,” in the empty actuality; where there is no body, there is likewise “no mind.”

In emptiness, the sutra states, “there is no suffering, origin, cessation, or path; there is no wisdom, no attainment, and even no non-attainment.”

As the Dalai Lama has said, in Essence of the Heart Sutra:

The scriptures state that the wisdom that realizes emptiness is the one true door, the only way we can become completely free from the grasp of ignorance and the suffering it causes….

It is essential that any spiritual aspirant cultivate a perspective that directly opposes the erroneous belief that grasps onto the concrete existence of things and events.
